| During his career with Ernst & Young,
he occupied a number of positions in his firm in Ottawa, Québec City and
Montréal. While in Ottawa during the 70's, he began a long association
with the Office of the Auditor General
of Canada and participated in two exchanges with the Office through
the Executive Interchange Programme. He was subsequently appointed
managing partner for the firm's Québec and Montréal offices. He was a
member of the Parizeau Commission, set up to study the future of municipal
governments in the province of Québec
(1986), as well as an advisor to the
Royal Commission on Electoral Reform(1991). For his distinguished service to the auditing and accounting
professions, he was awarded the designation "Fellow"
by the Order of
Chartered Accountants of Québec in 1986. He had been a member of the
Public Sector Accounting and Auditing Committee of the
Canadian
Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) since its foundation
in
1981, and Chairman of the Committee for
1984-85. He was awarded the
designation of Fellow by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario
in 1991. He was invested as Knight Commander of the Order of St. Gregory
the Great in 1997 by the Archbishop of Ottawa. He subsequently received
Honorary Doctorates from the
University of Ottawa and from
Waterloo University and was appointed an Officer of the Order of
Canada.
As Auditor General of Canada, Mr. Desautels was exposed extensively to
international accounting and auditing matters. He was a member of the
Governing Board of the
International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) and
chaired INTOSAI's
Committee on Accounting Standards, the Task Force on Auditor Independence
and INTOSAI's
Development Initiative.
He is presently a member of both the accounting and auditing standards
oversight councils of the
CICA,
the International Auditing and Assurance
Standards Board, the National Awards in Governance Advisory Committee
of the Conference Board of Canada, and a member of the
Dean's Council at the
School of Management of the
University of Ottawa. He
is also an Executive in Residence at the School of Management at the
University of Ottawa and
a member of a number of corporate and not-for-profit boards of directors.
Mr. Desautels married Shirley Leuthold in 1966. Mr. And Mrs. Desautels
have three sons: Marc, Pierre and André. In his leisure time Mr. Desautels
enjoys golf, skiing, gardening and spending time with his family and five
young grandchildren.
