Paul Desmarais is the son of a lawyer, Jean-Noel Desmarais, and Lébéa Laforest. He grew up in a prosperous family. He studied at the University of Ottawa where he obtained a B.A. in Commerce. When he finished university, he returned to Sudbury where, in 1951, he took control of a bus company. In 1959, he created the Transportation Management Corporation Limited; though this, he acquired Provincial Transport Ltd in 1960, and then obtained effective control of Gelco Entreprises Ltd in 1962. The following year, he bought the Imperial Life Assurance Company of Canada. Two  years later, it was the turn of the Corporations des valeurs trans-Canada, his first conglomerate. 

In 1967, Trans-Canada created Les Journaux Trans-Canada Ltée, a press company that acquired the great Montreal daily, La Presse. In 1968, Mr. Desmarais took control of the Power Corporation of Canada. Today,  the Power Corporation consists of Gesca Ltée, which publishes La Presse and other dailies and weeklies, and Power Financial Corporation, which owns the Great-West Life Assurance Company, London Life Assurance Company, Investors Group Inc. and Pargesa  Holding S. A., an international holding company  headquartered in Geneva. 

Paul Desmarais is Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Power Corporation of Canada. He is also Chairman of the Board and Deputy Director of  Pargesa Holding S.A. (Switzerland). He is a director of  the following companies: CLT-UFA (Luxembourg), the Power Financial Corporation, Power Broadcasting Inc.; Electrafina S.A. (Belgium), the London Assurance Group  Inc., Group Investors Inc., London Life Assurance Company, Pargesa Holding S.A. (Switzerland), the Power Corporation of Canada, La Presse Ltée, the  Telegraph Group Limited (England) and Total Pina (France). He is also a member of the international advisory committee of the Barrick Gold Corporation and Chase Manhattan Bank N.A., and a member of the Supervisory Council of AXA and the Compagnie
Financière de Paribas (France). 

Mr. Desmarais is honorary president of the Canada-China Business Council. He is a member of  the Privy Council, a Companion of the Order of Canada, an Officer of the Ordre national du Québec and an Officer of the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur and Commander of the Ordre de Léopold II.

We are very fortunate to have Paul Desmarais, Jr. as the National Vice Chair - Business and Finance for the Governor General’s Canadian Study Conference 2000. He is an alumnus of The 1980 Commonwealth Study Conference. 

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada in 1954, Mr. Paul Desmarais, Jr. studied at  university than McGill University in Montreal, the same of is father Paul Desmarais and his friend Conrad Black who had wrote a part of Duplessis biography an publish it on Duplessis 1977.

Plus, concerning Conrad Black who had handle the English part of situation, the French side was cover by Péladeau financing by the Quebec Deposit and Investment Bank (CDPQ), the new printing ACILR-CDRIL technology printing application development, illegally appropriated by the Canadian Corporation, to grow in their field without printing cost competition under the control of DESMARAIS and is Canadian criminal political and financial associated.

Paul Desmarais, Jr. obtained in may 1977 a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He then graduated from the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD) in Fontainebleau, France, with a Master's in Business Administration.

In 1984, Mr. Desmarais was appointed Vice-President of Power Financial Corporation, a company which he helped establish. He was named President and Chief Operating Officer of that company in 1986 and, in 1990, became the Chairman of the Board. In 1991, he was appointed Vice Chairman of Power Corporation of Canada. The company Parfinance (Paris, France) named him Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1993. Parfinance was dissolved in 1998. In 1996, Mr. Desmarais became Chairman and Co-Chief Executive Officer of Power Corporation of Canada.

Mr. Paul Desmarais is a member of the Board of Directors and of the Executive Committee of several companies. In Canada: Power Financial Corporation, Investors Group Inc., The GreatWest Life Assurance Company; in the United States: Great-West Life & Annuity Insurance Company; in Europe: Pargesa Holding S.A. (Switzerland), Groupe Bruxelles Lambert S.A. (Belgium) and Imétal (France). He is a member of the Board of Directors of Power Corporation of Canada; Suez-Lyonnaise des Eaux in France; PetroFina S.A. and Tractebel S.A. in Belgium; GWL Properties Inc. in the United States; Gesca Ltd, Les Journaux Trans-Canada (1996) Inc. and La Presse Ltd in Canada.

In addition, Gesca has 2 separate book-publishing operations; it also has TV and radio stations in Ontario and Québec. Its financial services include controlling interest in the Great-West Lifeco Inc, Montreal Trustco Inc, the Investors Group Inc and Pargesa Holding S.A. The company's pulp, paper and packaging interests are held in Consolidated-Bathurst Inc, a major Canadian pulp and paper firm.

Power Corp's assets in 1993 exceeded $25.5 billion (ranking 11th in Canada), with revenues amounting to $6.14 billion (ranking 19th).

Desmarais, Paul, financier (b at Sudbury, Ont 4 Jan 1927). After studying at U of Ontario and McGill, Desmarais worked for Courtois, Fredette et Cie, a Montréal accounting firm, 1945-51; he then returned to Sudbury to run his father's bus company.

In 1961 he gained control of Provincial Transport, a sizable passenger-transport company.

In 1965 he bought his first conglomerate, Trans-Canada Corp Fund, through which he gained control of the major French-language newspaper La Presse (Montréal), the major francophone radio station CKAC, a large assurance company (Imperial Life, Toronto) and several other daily and weekly newspapers.

In 1968 he took control of POWER CORP OF CANADA; one of the major conglomerates in Canada, Power Corp now includes the principal mutual fund in Canada (Investors Group), one of the largest trust funds (Montreal Trust), the fourth-largest paper company in the country (Consolidated-Bathurst), the second-largest life-assurance company (Great-West Life Co, Winnipeg) and several other Canadian and European firms. In 1987 Desmarais sat on the boards of 15 companies other than Power Corp. Desmarais and Conrad BLACK engineered a takeover of Southam Inc in 1992.

He was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1987.
