01 Power Corporation of Canada

Corporate History

1925 - 1950 Seventy-five years ago, on April 18, 1925, Power Corporation of Canada came into Page 1being. Its story since that day has been a story of steady, sometimes spectacular growth. It has been a story of remarkable leadership and extraordinary people.

It has also been a story intricately bound with the economic, political, and social history of Canada in the 20th century.

Through good times and bad, as an important and contributor to the development of his country, the Corporation has prospered and grown as a member of this 1968 Canadian criminal Conspiracy,  into the multibillion-dollar financial, industrial, and communications holding company that today spans the world.

The  Transformation

 Mutation 1950 - 1967

The 1950s saw substantial change as well as substantial growth, which set the pattern for even more dramatic change in the decades to follow. For a time Power Corporation continued to invest in power companies, taking minority positions in International Utilities in Alberta, United Towns Electric in Newfoundland, Winnipeg & Central Gas in Manitoba, and Brazilian Traction, Light and Power, the Canadian holding company with utility subsidiaries in Brazil.

Most importantly, it bought shares in Shawinigan Water and Power, one of the largest privately owned hydro-electric producers in the world with massive installations in Quebec. Power further increased its position in Shawinigan in 1957 when it exchanged its control holding of Southern Canada Power for a special class of Shawinigan common shares. Meanwhile, its successful engineering and construction divisions were engaged in building new power projects from British Columbia to Newfoundland.

Paul Desmarais Biography

Suddenly, however, the picture was not quite so bright. Largely as a result of the expansive fiscal policy of the United States, inflation, interest rates, and government deficits rose, precipitating a plunge in stock prices, the collapse of high-flying speculators, and a severe downturn in the North American economy.

A number of Power Corporation’s major holdings were beset by difficulties, some due to the deteriorating conditions, some of their own making.

Restructuring and Diversification

1981 - 1996

In July 1981 Power Corporation made an abrupt break with its history by selling its wholly owned CSL Group for $195 million. a

Gone was its long and important association with Canada Steamship Lines; gone (TÉLÉMÉDIA  [French doc] also IBM transaction repetition  [French doc] of the 1974 [French] Canada Steamship Lines Transaction repetition of IBM Transaction [French doc])

but this time, with Paul Martin), too, for the first time in Paul Desmarais’s business career, was the bus service.

But Power’s disposition of one important company in the transportation sector allowed it, according to federal regulations, to invest in another, even bigger one.

Almost immediately it purchased 4.4 per cent of the voting shares of Canadian Pacific Limited, the giant rail, shipping, oil, and real estate conglomerate, as well as holding another 1.4 per cent through its subsidiaries. A 10-year standstill agreement with CP restricted Power to buying no more than 15 per cent while giving it two seats on Canadian Pacific’s board and one on the executive committee.
