1The
computer:
any device which performs calculation. In this light, the Abacus,
calculating machine and slide rule may all be described as computer; however the
term is usually limited to those electronic DESK ENCYCLOPEDIA devices that are
given a program to follow, data to store or to calculate with, and means with
which to present results or other (stored) information.
2
Type
of computer:
Since have been talking almost exclusively about the
digital computer,
since this is the most versatile type. As we have seen, it requires information
to be feed into "bits". Contrarily, the other main type of computer, the
analog computer,
is designed to deal with continuously varying quantities, such as lengths or
voltages; the most everyday example of an analog computer is the slide rule.
Electronic analog computer
are usually designed for a specific task; as their accuracy is not high, their
greatest use is in providing model of situations as bases for experiment.
3
Programming:
A computer program consist
essentially of a setof instruction which operations to perform them, and order
in which subsequent data will be presented to it; for ease of use, the computer
may have subprograms built into its memory, so that, on receiving an
instructions such as LOG X,it will automatically go through the program
necessary to find the LOGARITHM of that piece of data supplied to it as X. Every
model of computer as a different machine languages or code; that is, the way in
which it should ideally be programmed; however, this language is usually
difficult and cumbersome for an operator to use. Thus a special program know a
compiler is retained by the computer, enabling it to translate computer
languages such as ALGOL, COBOL and FORTRAN, which are easily learned and use by
operators and programmers, into its owns machine code. Programmer also make
extensive use of ALGORITHMS to save programming and operating time.
